170 million new positions are emerging, 92 million are disappearing—a net gain of 78 million jobs by 2030. This figure from the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 sounds reassuring. The Cognizant report “New Work, New World 2026” documents the acceleration: the average AI exposure score across all occupations stands at 39 percent—30 percent above the original forecast for 2032. AI potentially influences 93 percent of all current jobs. At the same time, an ifo study from January 2026 shows that only one in five employees in Germany uses AI regularly. The Status Quo: How AI Is Changing the Labor Market in 2026

The German labor market in 2026 is under dual pressure. On one hand, the demographic shift is thinning the workforce: the baby boomer generation is retiring, and the labor force potential is shrinking for the first time by 40,000 people according to the IAB forecast for 2026. On the other hand, generative AI is changing the activity profiles in virtually every industry. Enzo Weber, head of the IAB research division, puts it succinctly: “AI is the technology of our time that can be deployed across all areas. It will take over more and more tasks, but in the labor market there will be a restructuring, not a collapse.”

According to the IAB Research Report 23/2025, AI will directly influence around 1.6 million jobs in Germany—either through elimination or through profound changes in their activities. At the same time, AI could increase annual economic growth by 0.8 percentage points, cumulatively 4.5 trillion euros over 15 years. IAB researcher Christian Schneemann emphasizes: “AI can become the bridge between economic growth and a shrinking population.”

The KfW study from February 2026 shows the state of affairs in the mid-market: 20 percent of companies now use AI—roughly 780,000 businesses, a fivefold increase compared to 2016 to 2018. Larger companies with more than 50 employees lead at 36 percent, but even micro-businesses with fewer than five employees already have 19 percent AI adoption. Knowledge-based services lead at 28 percent, construction brings up the rear at eight percent.

Academics Under Pressure, Skilled Workers on the Rise

It is not the low-skilled who bear the greatest automation risk, but the highly qualified. A Microsoft study based on 200,000 Copilot dialogues demonstrates: AI does not distinguish between academic and simple, but between structured and complex. Interpreters and translators lead the risk list with an AI applicability index of 0.49, historians follow at 0.48. Even mathematicians, data analysts, and web developers are among the 40 most affected occupations. At the other end stand excavator operators, roofers, and care assistants—with an AI applicability score near zero.

The IAB confirms: the substitution potential in expert occupations rose by ten percentage points between 2019 and 2022—the steepest increase across all qualification levels. The Federal Employment Agency reports for 2024 an average of 290,000 unemployed academics—47,000 more than the previous year. Simultaneously, unemployment among skilled workers with vocational training fell by 3.8 percent. Those who bring physical, situational, and interpersonal skills are currently best protected.

What is actually happening is not the deletion of entire professions but a shift within job profiles. Translators use AI-powered pre-translation and concentrate on cultural adaptation. Journalists automate routine reports for investigative research. Programmers write less boilerplate code and more system architecture.

Administrative professions are at the center of the automation wave. The WEF forecasts that secretarial staff and cashiers will experience the steepest decline. Yet Cognizant warns: AI cannot fully automate more than 40 percent of management and administrative tasks. Human expertise remains indispensable.

Across industries, dramatic shifts are visible. In the legal sector, the AI exposure score surged from nine to 63 percent according to Cognizant, for CEOs from 25 to 60 percent, and in education from eleven to 49 percent. The transformation is not limited to office professions—in the transport sector, the score also rose from six to 25 percent.

New Job Profiles Through AI

While existing roles are evolving, entirely new job profiles are emerging at the intersection of domain expertise and AI competency. According to LinkedIn data, AI-related positions dominate the list of fastest-growing occupations. 34 percent of companies are convinced that fundamentally new job profiles will emerge through AI.

Prompt Engineer: Specialists for precise communication with AI models. The role is evolving from niche to core competency in marketing, law, and product development—although experts warn that AI may eventually become better at designing prompts for other AI systems.

AI Ethicist and Compliance Specialist: They develop ethical guardrails for algorithmic decisions and audit systems for biases. With the EU AI Act, this role becomes a regulatory necessity.

AI Agent Conductor: Agent Conductors orchestrate multiple AI agents that collaboratively solve complex tasks—similar to a conductor leading an orchestra. Dell Technologies identifies this role as one of the most important new job profiles.

Data Annotator: They label and verify data for AI model training. A growing profession that combines domain knowledge with technical understanding.

AI Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer: Salaries range from 55,250 to 92,000 euros annually according to Robert Half. These roles show the strongest percentage growth of all occupational groups according to the WEF.

Augmentation Rather Than Replacement: Why Superteams Are the Future

The most productive response is augmentation—the systematic enhancement of human capabilities through AI. Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S articulates it precisely: “Upskilling employees will be the bridge over which today’s investments in AI lead to the tangible results of tomorrow.”

In companies that implement this principle, superteams emerge: the machine delivers data and analyses, the human delivers context and strategic decisions. The PwC AI Jobs Barometer demonstrates: AI-intensive industries have quadrupled their productivity growth from seven to 27 percent—not through headcount reduction but through upgrading human work. The WEF provides the human-machine distribution: today, humans perform 47 percent of tasks alone; by 2030, employers expect an even three-way split between human, machine, and combination.

Practical example: Mid-sized machine builder in northern Bavaria

A machine builder with 120 employees introduced a RAG-based knowledge assistant system in early 2025 that semantically indexes 15,000 pages of technical documentation. Service technicians now access information in seconds via natural language queries that previously required hours of research. Processing time per service inquiry dropped by 35 percent, and the first-resolution rate rose from 62 to 84 percent. No job was lost—the company handled 23 percent more orders with the same team and compensated for two unfilled positions.

New Work Models: How AI Is Changing the Way We Work

AI is changing not only what we work on but also how. Three trends are shaping work models in 2026:

Skill-based workforce planning is replacing rigid job descriptions. The WEF quantifies: 44 percent of core competencies will be redefined by AI by 2028. Companies are defining roles not by job titles but by competency profiles. What is relevant today may be outdated in 18 months.

Hybrid human-AI teams are becoming the standard. Intelligent copilots take over minute-taking, document summaries, and scheduling. 76 percent of IT managers already reward AI expertise with higher salaries. Those who master AI tools become sought-after team partners.

Continuing education is becoming an existential necessity. The ifo study demonstrates: formal AI introduction by the employer significantly boosts productivity gains compared to self-directed use. Germany, with a continuing education rate of 9.4 percent, falls below the EU average of 13.5 percent. 63 percent of employers cite skills gaps as the biggest hurdle according to the WEF. Only five percent of companies achieve a noticeable economic effect with AI, according to BCG. 1. Analyze activity profiles, not job titles. Which tasks are structured and repetitive, which require judgment? The IAB Job Futuromat shows for all 4,600 known occupations in Germany what percentage of tasks can be replaced by technology.

2. Channel Shadow AI. Two-thirds of all AI applications are used on employees’ own initiative according to the ifo study—without employer approval. The solution: clear AI guidelines and secure internal alternatives that harness initiative as a source of innovation.

3. Transform entry-level positions, do not eliminate them. Those who cut junior positions without replacement interrupt the talent pipeline. Better: design entry-level roles so that newcomers work with AI tools from the start.

4. Systematize and measure continuing education. 85 percent of employers plan continuing education according to the WEF, but implementation lags. Identify the five to ten tasks with the highest augmentation potential, train specifically, and measure the productivity gain.

5. Build AI governance from the start. The EU AI Act obligates companies from 2026 to ensure AI competency in their workforce. Governance structures create not only compliance but also trust among employees and partners.
